Watch this video for one of the most fundamental, yet difficult things to practice: SCALES!!! There are so many different approaches to using scales as a technique builder but the one demonstrated by Racer X guitarist Paul Gilbert is a true highlight of what can be accomplished if you put some time into learning/knowing your scales. The specific scale used here is F# Locrian. This is a "MODE" that is created by playing a Major Scale but starting on the 7th degree.
